第一段落は、実例と意見。「学問には、多くの場合一つの答えがある。しかし、その答えに行き着く道は多様である。例えば、小学生のとき、台形の面積の求め方に多くの方法があるということを教わった。そのとき、ただ答えを知っているだけでなく、どう考えるかということが大切なのだとわかった。……私は、回り道をするところに、学問を探求する意義があるのだと思う。」など。
第二段落は、理由。「その理由は、新しいものを創造するときには、さまざまな試行錯誤があるはずだからだ。私の趣味はプログラミングだが、あるときどうしても自分のしたいことができずに、何日間も悩んだことがある。しかし、その遠回りの過程で、当初思ってもいなかったような別の方法を考えついた。この経験から……」など。
第三段落は、方法。「学問の探求のために大事なことは、最初の目的をしっかり持ち続けることだ。しかし、そのためには幅広い学力を身につけておく必要がある。いろいろな遠回りを試すためにも、自分の専門分野以外の多くのことに関心を持つことが大切だ。湯川秀樹さんは物理学者だが、他の学問分野の人と多くの交流があったと聞いている。そのように……」など。
第四段落は、反対理解とまとめ。「確かに、先人の切り開いてくれた道を歩くことも最初のうちは大切だ。しかし、本当に大事なことは、その真っ直ぐな道の先に、自分なりの道を切り開いていくことだ。私はこれから……」など。
